Opinion | The Chain by Adrian McKinty

“George Orwell was wrong, she thinks. In the future, it won’t be the state that keeps tabs on everyone by extensive use of surveillance; it will be the people. They’ll do the state’s work for it by constantly uploading their locations, interests, food preferences, restaurant choices, political ideas, and hobbies to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media sites. We are our own secret police.”

The Chain makes us question: how far will we go out of love for our child? Even put other parents through the same ordeal in order to get your child back? The book is dark to that point.

Adrian McKinty based the book on a method that a mexican cartel uses for torture and/or punishment and brought us a fast paced, filled with action thriller, that makes us want to know more.
It’s not about money, is about The Chain. This ingenious flawless plan where parents have to go through a series of ordeals, stablished by The Chain’s founders, that principles are put to test.

I’ve questioned myself throughout the book, how far is right to root for a kidnapper and if I was capable to resist the darkness thar is involved in the crime. McKinty writing is that good.

We can count on Rachel and her former ex-brother-in-law to bring back Kylie, her daughter, and end The Chain for good, while facing their own demons.

How far a damning action is considered right and justifiable to the eyes of the law and society?

How far we establish a damning action right and acceptable?

What comes biologically natural in a parent is justifiable to another parent?

These are all questions that the books bring.

Quick read, the book is divided by two parts, from multiple points of view, narrated by third person type. Although the timeline is the present, we have a few flashbacks related to some characters growth.

Predictable but very creative and very well written.
A few discrepancies aside, it’s an excellent thriller even if solely because of the genius behind The Chain build up.

The author doesn’t leave anything at random nor loosed ends: introduce us toa desperate parent’s mind and to a sociopath’s mind.
