Opinion | Anne of The Green Gables by Lucy Montgomery

“Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive. It's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?"

The book was published in 1908, years after the author sent the manuscript to several editors and being rejected by them.

Ths children’s novel portraits Anne’s the adaptation and growth after being adopted by a couple of brothers who initially wanted a boy to help in their farm. The brothers, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, despite refusing Anne at first, end up keeping her.

The book accompanies Anne through 1876 all to 1981 – since she was 11 years old until her late teens.

Because it’s a children’s book, it’s vital to read it as such, through the magical and imaginary mind of a child and, for that reason, Anne is one of the sweetest girls that I met in literature.

Her ability to imagine and bring the best of everything, the sweetness and consideration for others and the ability to love with all her heart, allows us to love her as much.

Anne continues to be a child, so anytime she has a setback, Anne becomes a true drama queen, that we just want to hold and reassure her that everything is going to be ok.

Anne loves nature and the all the description of the island makes us imagine a spring wonderworld. The rules of women back at that time is quite transparent in the book, and the fact that the female protagonist wants to be something more and works for it is truly inspiring, even more coming from an author that actually lived under them.

Don’t expect a fast paced, plot twist, extraordinary story. This book is essentially about Anne’s growth.

It’s a wonderful and easy to read, classic children’s book que made the world fall in love, me included.
